THE CLUB IS
NOW OPEN FOR NEW MEMBERSHIP. THE CLUB HAS TWO SECTIONS AVAILABLE
FOR MEMBERSHIP, BOWLING MEMBER AND ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP FOR BOTH
LADIES AND GENTS. THE CRITERIA FOR BOTH OF THESE MEMBERSHIPS IS
TO BE THICK SKINNED AND HAVE A RIGHT GOOD SENSE OF HUMOUR.
The
committee, and members, of the club would like to thank everyone
who turned up for the three events that were held over the
festive period. During these events some fund raising was done
and we managed to raise £657 for St. Vincents Hospice.
THE
GAME OF BOOLS
Lawn Bowling (or bowls), is perhaps the oldest of all ball
games, apart from bedroomantics. It was played in ancient Egypt,
Greece and Rome and spread to Europe by the 10th century.
"Some
confusion exists between the games of Lawn Bowling which does
not use pins and the entirely unrelated game of Ten Pin Bowling,
which does use pins. Both, however, rank among the most popular
participant sports in the world. Today, more than 100 million
people in 80 countries participate in bowling."
The
green,
on which the game is played must be at least 40 yd (at least 36
m) square, surrounded by a ditch 12 in (30 cm) deep and 12 in
wide, enclosed by a sloping bank.
The green
is divided lengthwise by bits of wid at either end, into six
"rinks," 18 to 21 ft (5.4 to 6.3 m) wide, or what ever
suits the green keeper.
The bowls
may not be more than 16.5 in (41.9 cm) in circumference or 3.5
lb (1.6 kg) in weight, are size 7 heavies legal ?. They are made
of wood, hardened rubber, or a synthetic composition and are
flattened (biased) slightly on one side so that they roll with a
curve.
In singles
and pairs, each player has four bowls,
unless the
skip is crap,
while in triples, each player has three bowls,
when I
play only the lead plays three bowls,
and in fours competition, there are two bowls per player,
all
depends who you are playing with.
The booling gear, depending on who you are,
essential items are:
booling shoes, bools, grey or black troosers,
club shirt or white shirt and tie, a fleece or three, waterproof
troosers and jacket, a white bunnet or hat, a wee towel to dry
yer bools because its raining, a big bit of chalk, to chalk the
leads bowls, a wee bit for the rest of the teams bowls, a pen if
your bad enough to skip, a pound for the wappenschaw, and a
motor car gets you picked most weeks for away games. If I've
missed anything then please let me know.
The club are also looking at
putting a new covered building over the green which would
provide the members with virtually year round bowling but the
debate is to keep grass or put down a different type of surface.
With the state of the Scottish weather I think this would be a
good idea. The structure can be put away when the sun is out.
The structure is inflatable. Seen here covering some tennis
courts.

A woman
answers the door to a market researcher.
"Good morning madam, I'm doing some research for Vaseline. Do
you use it at
all in your household?"
"Oh yes, all the time. It's very good for cuts, grazes and
burns."
"Do you use it for anything else?"
"Like what?"
"Ahem.. err.. well.. during.. ahem.. sex."
"Oh, of course. Yes, we smear it on the bedroom doorknob to keep
the kids
out."
